Lee Harvey Oswald was just what he claimed to be when he was arrested in Dallas: a patsy. Why did the conspirators choose Oswald for this role? In my ongoing research into the JFK assassination, I plan to post relevant links to what more diligent and better-connected researchers have learned about this mystery character. Maybe in time we can make a sound judgment as to who Oswald really was and why he was chosen for his ill-fated part in the JFK assassination "play."
Here's a link to a video called JFK II - the Bush Connection put together by the makers of "Loose Change," ( a documentary about 9-11), wherein, if I heard correctly, Oswald was an intelligence agent reporting directly to J. Edgar Hoover in his efforts to locate training camps for anti-Castro cuban exiles here in the States as per President Kennedy's orders who wanted them shut down. This would, of course, anger and frustrate the CIA which was passionately devoted to training exiles to foment revolution in Cuba and to assassinate Fidel Castro. What irony then to use an enemy inside the intelligence community as a patsy for the JFK murder! This revelation about Oswald comes near the end of the video - and it makes sense, so you'll have to be patient, but you'll get a good review of the facts of the assassination along the way!
UPDATE 1/5/12: The assertion that LHO was engaged in locating and shutting down anti-Castro guerrilla training camps is not factually correct according to Judyth Vary Baker's book, "Me & Lee." Oswald was involved in anti-Castro activities as a Navy intelligence agent on loan to the FBI and CIA, and this work involved infiltrating pro-Castro organizations to identify Castro sympathizers. In the course of performing that function, LHO gave information to the FBI so they could raid the very anti-Castro training camp for which Lee had made a training film on firearm handling. Although Lee managed to send out rumors that someone else was responsible for leaking the information, the raid fanned the flames of anti-Castro anger (and as a by-product, anti-JFK sentiments, which LHO did not wish for). So, although he played the part of being instrumental in an FBI raid on an anti-Castro training camp, it was just a facet of his faked involvement in pro-Castro activities, which may have been ordered with the idea that it could be used to create a false pro-Castro, Marxist identity for Lee Harvey Oswald if they wanted to use him as a scapegoat later.
This article by Joan Mellen, "Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald?," has facts and assertions about Oswald's intelligence community connections that seem to support the hypothesis of the video linked above. Here's just one interesting passage from it: "Oswald, arrested in Dallas, and asking, famously to be represented by a Communist Party lawyer named John Abt was Oswald signaling to his handlers that he intended to maintain his cover, that he would not tell the truth. It didn’t, of course, do him any good. Oswald was murdered on assignment by his old acquaintance Jack Ruby anyway."
The following paragraph is from a letter claiming that Oswald was an "American hero" written by Paul Kuntzler to the chairman of the board of the Washington Post in which he blames the CIA, FBI, LBJ, the Mafia, certain arms of the military, etc., for the JFK murder:
Lee Harvey Oswald was working for the FBI at the time of the assassination making $200 a month. He was also working for the CIA. On or about Tuesday, November 12, 1963, Oswald delivered a note to his FBI supervisor, James P. Hosty, Jr., warning him that the assassination was about to take place. Hosty sent out a wire on November 17, 1963 to all FBI Offices. The wire read: “Bureau has determined that a militant revolutionary group may attempt to assassinate President Kennedy in his proposed trip to Dallas, Texas, November 22, Nineteen Sixty-Three.” After the assassination, all the wires were destroyed except the one in the New Orleans Office. The Warren commission, whose members were appointed by LBJ, held an emergency, executive session on Saturday morning, January 22, 1964 to discuss Oswald’s FBI number and FBI salary. While the two assassins on the sixth floor of the Texas Book Depository Building were shooting the president, Oswald was in the second floor lunch room. He briefly stepped out on the steps of the Texas Book Depository Building and was photographed. Oswald was already in the Texas Theater before Officer Jefferson Davis Tippitt was killed.

11/30/14: One of the most credible and comprehensive articles I've read on why Lee Harvey Oswald was used as a patsy: http://humansarefree.com/2014/11/lee-harvey-oswald-proved-innocent-he.html
Here's an odd glimpse of Lee Harvey Oswald from a lady doctor who contacted Oswald before the assassination after hearing strange things about him and predictions about the assassination.
Jim Garrison believed Oswald was an unsung American hero. Read Lee Harvey Oswald -the Patsy.
Despite attempts to point the public in the direction of left-wing Commies or Socialists and to tie Oswald into this scenario, it's interesting to note that at first it was thought the John-Birchers of Dallas and their far right-wing conservative groupies were behind te assassination. See this article by Jackie Jura on Orwell Today website.
Innocent until proven guilty? What would have - or should have - been the verdict if Oswald had lived to get a fair trial? See Oswald Innocent? A Lawyer's Brief from the National Guardian.
The rifle recovered from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository on the day of the assassination was identified by a gun expert as a Mauser, not a Mannlicher-Carcano! That expert never recanted his testimony either. Was the Mauser planted to implicate someone else (an elderly Negro?) and then plans changed? Read the details of this theory here and here .
As soon after the assassination as September 6, 1964, British author, Bertrand Russell, wrote this article wondering at the handling of evidence supposedly against Lee Harvey Oswald in the case.

Mark Lane, an attorney and researcher from very early on after the assassination, obviously doubted that Lee Harvey Oswald was the shooter, or even one of the shooters, involved and he wasn't afraid to criticize the all-powerful, lily-white Warren Commission Report! Below are the links to some early footage of Mark Lane in action!

UPDATE: 1/5/12: A new book by a woman who claims she was Oswald's lover just prior to the JFK assassination may shed some light on the enigma that was Lee Harvey Oswald. Judyth Vary Baker insists in her book, "Me & Lee - How I Came to Know, Love and Lose Lee Harvey Oswald," that Oswald would never have killed the president. I'm sure there will be countless reviews of the book, both pro and con, but this article gives the gist of it quite nicely, as well as a link to Baker's blog. For informative videos proving Lee Harvey Oswald's innocence, visit the YouTube page: lola4jvb4lho.
George de Morenschildt, Lee's good friend in the White Russian community in Dallas, wrote a memoir of his time spent with Lee, "I Am a Patsy; I Am a Patsy," in which he wrote:
"In this way both Lee and I were non-conformist, even revolutionaries. But my long years of experience in Latin America, followed by my son's death and the ensuing saddness, made me commiserate with the fate of the poor and of the starving. A younger man, I was career and mony mad, a hustler...But Lee was the same since his childhood, which made him such a beautiful and worthwhile person to me"
He writes of a conversation he had at a dinner party Jackie's mother, Mrs. Hugh Auchincloss (Janet), gave after their depositions before the Warren Commission:
"Eventually, we had to talk sadly about the assassination. Allan Dulles was there also and he asked me a few astute questions about Lee. One of them was, I remember, did Lee have a reason of hating President Kennedy? However, when I answered that he was rather an admirer of the dead President, everyone took my answer with a grain of salt. Again the overwhelming opinion was that Lee was the sole assassin.
I was still thinking of poor Lee, comparing his life with the life of these multi-millionaires, I tried to reason - to no avail It seemed to me that I was facing a conspiracy, a conspiracy of stubborness and silence. Finally both Jeanne and Janet (Mrs. Auchincloss) got very emotional embraced each other and cried together, one ever the losss of her son-in-law, another over the loss of a great president she admired so much.
"Janet," I said before leaving, "you were Jack Kennedy's mother-in-law, and I am a complete stranger. I would spend my own money and lots of my time to find out who were the real assassins or the conspirators. Don't you want any further investigation? You have infinite resources."
"Jack is dead and nothing will bring him back," replied she decisively.
"Since he was a very beloved president, I wouldn't let a stone unturned to make sure that the assassin if found and punished," implored Jeanne. "We both have grave doubts in Lee's guilt."
Later we discussed for a long time why a woman so close to President Kennedy, nor Robert Kennedy and the rest of Kennedy family, as we discovered later, would be so adamant on this subject. A later chapter, dealing with Wellem Oltman's strange adventure, will raise further grave doubts in readers mind. Would it be possible, as much as it sounds like a sacrilege, that Lee was a "convenient" assassin to all the relatives and friends of the late President Kennedy? Convenient not in any derogatory sense but just because was a PATSY, a patsy not involved in any revenge arising out of JFK's biggest and costleist mistake - the Bay of Pig"
(Read his rough draft online, complete with typos and poor word choices, but the sentiment comes through!)
"When They Kill a President," by Roger D. Craig, (read online), the Dallas officer who saw the first rifle found at the TSBD - a German Mauser. He was later "suicided" for his refusal to back down on what he knew, including that he saw Lee Harvey Oswald run down the slope immediately after leaving the TSBD and get into the light-green rambler driven by n Latino-looking man.
